Spring meeting – Technical program for researchers to present their work. Included is time for networking, a keynote speaker, lunch and morning refreshments, and awards given for the best undergraduate and graduate student presentation ($750 travel expenses to a chemistry meeting of their choosing).
Fall Social – An opportunity for members to socialize and network with colleagues. It includes dinner, keynote speaker, undergraduate poster session, and breakfast the following morning. Lodging for undergraduate students presenting a poster is paid by the section. We also pay the lodging for executive committee members (elected officers) to acknowledge efforts over the year.
Board meetings – Currently held semiannually in conjunction with the Spring Meeting and Fall Social. Includes treasurer’s report, councilor’s report, and other business.
Chemistry Olympiad – With prizes to the top finishers (up to ten: $250, 200, 150, 100, and the remainder at 50).
Leadership Institute – We send one new member of the executive committee to this national meeting to gain a better understanding of the national ACS administration and programs and to improve their leadership for professional purposes.
Elections – Held every fall. Results must be submitted to national by Dec 1. Offices and terms outlined in bylaws. Secretary performs the balloting.
National Council – The Montana section councilor travels to the semiannual national meetings, participates, and prepares a report for the Montana section board meetings
Annual report – Prepared by outgoing Chair and Treasurer, typically in February. Audit of Financial report by outgoing chair and a past treasurer is proposed.
Visiting speaker meetings – Speakers from the national ACS directory or elsewhere are invited to visit various sites in our section to provide educational/informative topics and an opportunity for members to get together.
Regional meetings – The Montana section is expected to host a regional meeting every 10 years or so.
Website – The primary mechanism for the Montana Section to communicate general information, announcements, news, bylaws, and officer contact information. It also serves an archive for board meeting minutes, councilor reports, and annual reports.
Financial duties – Checking and savings/CD accounts are maintained by the treasurer along with one other co-signer. IRS form 990-N (e-Postcard) is filed by Apr 15.
